Corfu, Greece

Our third stop was the Island of Corfu Greece. There are several different places to go on the island, but we chose to explore Old town on our own. Old town is cool in that is the on the tip of a peninsula and actually has two fortresses. The old fort, built in the 15th century by the Venetians on the site of an old Byzantine castle, and the new fort, built 8 years later, so I wouldn't say it was really that new. Corfu is known for their kumquats and olive oil, so I got some oil and Erin got some candied kumquats.

The old town is about 1 or 2 miles wide, so we were able to walk from one side to the other relatively easy. We actually walked around inside the new fort, and only saw the old fort from the outside. Overall, Corfu was ok, but nothing spectacular. We did get our first taste of baklava in Greece and had fun trying to read the Greek words and looking at the sites. We had really hope to go to the archeological museum, because the book said it had some great stuff, but it was closed, so maybe we would have thought Corfu better had we been able to get in there.

Overall, I was happy to be there and see all the sights. Enjoy the pictures, and keep checking in.

In case you are interested in a summer home

The new fortress from where we got off the shuttle

Approaching the new fort

Steps to get to the fort

Walking around inside. We were actually the first people there

Looking towards the top

On the top part, where the defenders would have been fighting

Looking across old town to the new fort

Guard tower

Some old pottery from a little museum on the top level of the fort

Some old jugs that held oil and water.

I didn't check back to see if the car ever got towed.

Sitting by the Aegean sea

Archeological musuem

Sad. Probably plumbing problems

Old fort and a cool building to the left.

Looking across old town

Another look at the old fort.

Out to the bay

Our ship, taken from the top of the new fortress

Old map of Corfu

Snacks

Bacon and cheese pie

I gave some bread to the pigeons and they loved it

BAKLAVA!!!!!

Bell tower of St. Spyridon. He saved the town like 3 or 4 times.

They even have it in Greek. Pastor Heimer or Stephen would definitely win if we played this version.

Navy ship

Our ship and the Delfin. The Delfin had been following us from Venice, to Croatia, and here. I think it got scared of the size because we never saw it again.
