Our second city visited lies on the Adriatic sea on the coast of Croatia. The city is called Dubrovnik and it is majestic. The ship dock in a newer part of town, but all the action happens in Stari Grad (old town). The old town was fortified by huge walls in the 13th century to keep attackers from both land and sea at bay. You can actually walk on top of these walls around Old Town. They say it is about 6300 feet, or just over a mile, but with all the steps and grades, it was a nice bit of exercise. The city was named a UNESCO World Heritage sight, and is a favorite among tourists. During the war for independence, the town came under heavy siege, but it was quickly restored and welcomes all visitors with open arms. This was one of my favorite stops on the trip. Incidentally, we were there on Croatian Independence Day. I took some videos of a marching band and this cool bell ringer, but stupid blogger won't upload them.
Enjoy the pics and check back. Many, many, many more blogs about the trip to come.

Love the historical perspective you put in each entry. I should have done a better job of that in my notes. Good pics, and another good memory!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures and nice summary. But it is the Adriatic Sea which Dubrovnik hugs, not the Aegean.
